Sanctus LeCot is a classical music opera by Michelangelo Galilei and Jacopo Peri written in 1600. The San Franzino composer scholars of the Vatican decided to make it public for the first time ever on March 30, 2015. This libretto (really a collection of poems) was penned at the papal court and allowed visitors to discover it more fully. It was then published as an ebook on Amazon Kindle with tons of amazon reviews that were mostly positive; however, there were some negative ones as well. In the opera, a father wants his son to be a priest. But his son's only interest is in becoming a soldier. The father explains that he has been promised riches from the Duke of Athens, so he’s trying to get his son a wife who will later provide a dowry to help him gain the money for this quest. The boy’s mother can’t understand why their lives have become so complicated and miserable. Calisto, disguised as an old woman, arrives at their house and sings her lament at being unwanted by her parents and how alone she feels. The old woman's lament is a scene from an opera. In the church, people come to hear a preacher that is going to speak. He urges the people to repent and do good if they want to avoid Judgment Day happening in their lifetime. The Duke of Athens arrives at LeCot's home and tells him that he’s going to give him his daughter for a wife as soon as he makes a little money from his job as a tax collector. The Duke praises LeCot as being very religious and worthy of marrying his daughter. LeCot is now back at work with the peasants collecting taxes from them for the Duke. They complain that their wives and children are starving and that they can’t afford to give any money. However, LeCot is telling the Duke that he’s made a lot of money from the taxes. As a reward, the Duke gives him his daughter as a wife as he promised. The peasants rebel because now they have to pay 500 times more taxes. They try to convince LeCot to join them against the Duke to get back for all the grief they've been caused. But LeCot refuses saying it will bring a bad name on his marriage and says he can't let his wife down by doing something that's going to put her in a bad light as well as himself. This infuriates the peasant who say that any other man would do it out of revenge. LeCot's mother is singing about how she’ll be very rich after her son gets married; however, she states that it'll be lonely without him around. She reminisces about all the times he’s played with their cat and dog as a child and how they were so happy together. The old woman returns to sing another lament because her son has married someone else. The old woman's lament is another scene from an opera. The peasants are telling LeCot that all their crops have been destroyed by hail and there’s no food for his wife or the baby that she’s just had. cfa1e77820
